Accessibility Status: Ongoing Improvements Towards WCAG 2.1 AA Compliance
As part of our commitment to digital inclusion, we are currently conducting a full accessibility audit of the Independent College website to align with WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards.
During this process, we have identified a number of areas that do not yet meet full compliance. These include:
- Colour Contrast: Some text elements have insufficient contrast, particularly when layered over opaque or dynamic backgrounds. These are visually important design components, and we are actively working on solutions that balance accessibility and design integrity.
- Missing or Incomplete Labels: A small number of interactive elements (e.g., buttons and form fields) are currently missing accessible labels or roles, which may affect users relying on assistive technologies.
- Keyboard Navigation & Focus Indicators: In certain areas, keyboard users may not see a visible focus indicator or experience a logical navigation order. Improvements are being tested to enhance keyboard-only accessibility.
- Image Descriptions (Alt Text): We’ve found some images lacking meaningful alternative text. These are being updated to better support screen reader users.
- Headings & Semantic Structure: Some content sections do not follow a clear heading hierarchy or use proper semantic HTML, which can reduce clarity for screen reader users and impact page navigation.
- Responsive Scaling & Reflow: We are reviewing how text and layout adapt to zoom and mobile screens, particularly for users who need larger text or custom scaling.
